26 September 1999 - Sunday

Our stay in Chile is coming to an end. Iquique is our last port in this country. It's a fascinating tropical town located in the shadow of high, rocky, sandy and desert mountains. The buildings are of Spanish style, mostly wooden, thoroughly restored, creating a specific ambience of the town. The name being of Indian origin means 'one on top of the other' and refers to sea lions, the pods of which occupy the beaches in the town centre. When relaxing the sea lions lean against each other and that is where the town's name comes from. The funny thing is that it has not rained here ever since 1986.

In Iquique we finished our last land expeditions. The first one in which the whole crew took part led from Antofagasta to the Atacama Desert. The second one led from Iquique to Peru, the Titicaca Lake, Cuzco on Machu Picchu and finnaly to Colca Canyon. Rafal and Wiesiek took part in that one. They had a number of amazing impressions.

At present the whole crew is onboard and Antica is prepared for the cruise. We are leaving tomorrow. Two long stages ahead of us. The first one to Callao in Peru (650 Nm) and the other one to Salinas in Ecuador (600Nm). Salinas is going to be the departure port before setting out to Galapagos. We should get there at the end of October.
